Time Article:China's response to US arms deals with Taiwan

Congress announced on Wednesday that it would sign a $5.85 billion arms deal with Taiwan to equip the outdated Taiwan airforce with much needed modern armaments. China regards this as a direct threat to them as they believe Taiwan must eventually be reinstated into the peoples republic of China and the US arms deal is creating friction for that to happen. In the past US dealings with china's enemies resulted in a 1 year cut in the US's alliance with China, and Taiwan proposes buying up to $6.5 billion more in future deals. If the US goes through with thiese further deals it could result in a lasting detramental effect on the US's already tenuous relationship with China.
